This historic book represents a snapshot in time – a time just before the Regional Operations Centres (ROC) scheme began to bite into the last of the mechanical signal boxes and consume the earlier generation power signal boxes as part of the Digital Railway initiative.

All signal boxes extant at the very start of 2010 are listed in sections dealing with Network Rail, London Underground, Tram & Metro, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Heritage railways, and signal boxes preserved away from the railways. The book even lists replica signal boxes in people’s gardens.

Edited by Peter Kay, the contents result from painstaking research and record keeping by a host of Society members.

The listings are complemented by some unique superb colour maps drawn by David Allen which not only show the location of the signal boxes but also the method of signalling in use along the line.
