Timetable Appendices
The Appendices available are listed by Railway Company or the British Railways Region, Railtrack Zone or Network Rail Route that issued them. Just click on the appropriate button below to go to the lists that are of interest to you. The PDFs are supplied strictly “As Is”. The entries in each list will make it clear what is available to download and what is only available by other means.
In early days the information nowadays included in General and Sectional Appendices was a part of the railway company rule book or included at the back of the working timetable as an appendix. A process of evolution followed with railway companies producing a single Appendix separate from the rule book and timetable. The companies were indivualistic and precise content varied between the companies ranging from minimal to highly informative. The Great Western Railway distinguished between General and Sectional Appendices from an early date but it was only with the advent of the Grouping that the rest of the “Big Four” followed suit. Some companies produced separate 'working over' editions as well to cover those portions of another company over which they had running powers. Appendices in a 'uniform' format have been produced since 1960 with the Western Region trialling the style ahead of general introduction on 1 October 1960.
The British Railways General Appendix (BR29944) was abolished and replaced by the Appendix to the Rule Book (BR87109/43) from 2 June 1990.
Most documents in the digital archive are in PDF format. However, some larger files may be in JPG, PDF, PNG or TIF format. The files are supplied strictly “As Is”. The entries in each list will make it clear what is available to download and what is only available by other means.
Please do not pass copies of the files around, instead ask interested persons to contact the Society to obtain their own copy. In terms of copyright, British Railways (Residuary) Ltd confirmed to the Society that it was 'not interested' in historical documents that had outlived their operational usefulness and this line seems to have been followed by Railtrack and now Network Rail, as may be evidenced by the quantity of modern material that has entered the public domain through eBay and other auction houses and second hand bookstalls. Similar advice has been received from London Underground in respect of material obtained lawfully from their staff or is already in the public domain.
