Signal Fact 52

In 1932 the line from Coulsdon to Brighton (via Quarry) became the longest section of main line to be fully signalled by colour light signalling.

A length of 36 miles with many signals functioning automatically.

ELR The corresponding Engineer's Line Reference(s). This will be blank for railways that never came within British Railways terms of reference. It will also be blank where British Railways had no surviving responsibility for infrastructure at the time the ELR system came into use.

Current Quail shows Wath Road Junction to Dearne Junction as 167m71c to 168m64c, datum St Pancras (SMJ1); then 17m15c at Dearne Junction decreasing to 11m29c at Moorthorpe (SMJ2), datum Burton Salmon.
MR Distance Book (sheet 10F 1913) does not give milepost mileages for any of this RailRef.
MR Distance Book (sheet 10 1919 and sheet 11 1920) indcates that MR mileages applied at that time.
1893 OS maps show mileposts variously labelled Wath Junction and Swinton.
