Signal Fact 27
John Saxby devised the first lever frame with a limited form of co-working in which the lever worked both the points and the relevant signal.
It was installed at Bricklayers Arms Junction in 1856 and was patented by John Saxby.

This page should be regarded as “Work in Progress”. The webmaster will welcome additional information for this page.
In the list below the information is set out in tabular form, spread over four columns. The column entries are -
RailRef | The Line Code used in RailRef system. |
Line Detail | The principal locations included within the Line Code. They are arranged in 'down' direction order. Locations shown are primarily stations and junctions to allow easy cross check against published atlases. Signal box names appear in italics where these are 'intermediate' to stations or have been shown to facilitate links from other pages on this web site. The inclusion of a station or junction name does not imply that there was always a signal box of that same name! |
SBR | The section reference used in the relevant Signal Box Register published by the Society. |
ELR | The corresponding Engineer's Line Reference(s). This will be blank for railways that never came within British Railways terms of reference. It will also be blank where British Railways had no surviving responsibility for infrastructure at the time the ELR system came into use. |

LY032 | Oldham Road Goods Branch
0m72c Oldham Road GoodsThe 1937 Appendix 'table A' entry on page 44 implies there is only one branch and refers to a maximum speed down the incline at Oldham Road of 4mph - and then puts the figure in the 'up' column which implies a down gradient into the goods yard and a climb back out. Centering an OS map on 385438 399516 and looking at the 1956 1:10,560 edition shows the branch to be on a viaduct between New Allen Street SB and Livesey Street at which point the line goes two ways. This line goes to the main goods yard and one of tracks extends across Rochdale Road to reach premises on the north side. |
ORG | |
LY033 | Oldham Road St George's Incline datum Miles Platting Station Junction 0m73c Oldham Road GoodsThe second line from the split at Livesey Street goes straight on and the 1850 1:1,056 town plan shows this to be the original access. The map also reveals the origin of the St George's name. The incline crosses over St George's Street which led from Oldham Road under the incline to St George's Church. By the 1893 map the church has disappeared with its position occupied by the completely redevloped and expanded goods depot and LY032 above although St George's Street is still there and gives access to the Goods Yard. Present day OS maps do not show St George's Street as modern (since the 1981 edition map) developments have obliterated it. There are detail working instructions on page 123 of the 1937 Appendix. The original Manchester terminus of the Manchester & Leeds Railway (1839-1844) was at the bottom of the incline. |
